Where does the data come from?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, US city average: 405,747 monthly and annual values across 726 series, with the all-items index going back to 1913.

How does the calculator work?

It converts an amount between any two years or months since 1913 using the ratio of the all-items index, so $100 in 1990 comes back as about $246 today. Monthly precision is available where both months have published values.

Can I get category-level inflation?

Yes. The CPI endpoints expose every series, from broad groups such as food and energy to items such as eggs, gasoline, rent and medical care, with both seasonally adjusted and unadjusted variants.

The data is refreshed daily, so each mid-month CPI release from the BLS appears automatically the day it is published.

Does it cover other countries?

No. This is US CPI only. Exchange rates for converting between currencies are in the Currency Exchange Rates API.
