A UPCitemdb alternative with ingredients, allergens and Nutri-Score, not just a product name

UPCitemdb is a quick way to turn a UPC into a title and some retail listings, and its no-sign-up tier is handy for a prototype. The free plan stops at 100 requests a day and the first paid plan is $99 a month. The Barcode Lookup API is built for food, cosmetics and household products: scan an EAN, UPC or GTIN and get the brand, quantity, ingredients, allergens, Nutri-Score, NOVA group and per-100 g nutrition from 4.3 million products, with the Open Facts attribution included.

Reasons to pick Barcode Lookup API

  • Nutrition and ingredients, which no retail-listing database carries, for food, beauty, pet food and household products.
  • Search by name or brand, filter by category, country, Nutri-Score or NOVA group, and a random-product endpoint for testing.
  • Share-alike data done right: the Open Database License attribution comes back in every response so you can display it.
  • The same key also opens the Barcode Generator API for printing the codes you look up.

When UPCitemdb is still the better choice

  • Your products are electronics, apparel or general retail; UPCitemdb's listings cover those where Open Facts data does not.
  • You specifically want retail offers and prices with a product.
