A Calendarific alternative with 204 countries, long weekends and no attribution clause
Calendarific covers more than 230 countries and its free plan is a fair trial: 500 calls a month with attribution required and limited historical and upcoming data. The Public Holidays API takes a narrower, deeper cut: official public holidays for 204 countries from 2020 to 2028, loaded into its own database, with a few endpoints apps actually need, is today a holiday, what is next, and which weekends are long, on the same token plan as every other API in the catalog.

Reasons to pick Public Holidays API
- Computed answers, not just lists: is-it-a-holiday for a date, the next N holidays from today, and long weekends for a country and year.
- Regional scope on every row, so a county-only holiday is never mistaken for a national one.
- Legacy routes compatible with the Nager.Date shape, so existing code moves with a host change.
- The Trading Calendar API on the same key for market holidays and early closes.
When Calendarific is still the better choice
- You need observances, religious calendars or countries outside the 204 covered.
- You need years before 2020 or after 2028 today.

Questions people ask
- Where does the holiday data come from?
- From Nager.Date, an open-source project under the MIT licence, loaded into the API's own database and served with no per-call dependency on the upstream project.
- How are long weekends calculated?
- Runs of three or more days off formed by Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, computed per country and year. The United States has eight in 2026.
- Can I ask whether a specific date is a holiday?
- Yes. The today endpoint accepts a country and an optional date and answers with a boolean plus the matching holidays. Without a country it lists every country celebrating that day.
