What level of detail is covered?

Populated places: cities, towns, districts and neighbourhoods with a population of 500 or more, 235,640 of them worldwide. It is not a street-address geocoder.

How are forward results ranked?

By population, after matching exact names first, then prefixes, then alternate names in other languages and scripts. The response says which kind of match was used.

What does reverse geocoding return?

The nearest places to a coordinate by great-circle distance, with the distance in kilometres, optionally filtered by minimum population so you get the nearest town rather than the nearest hamlet.

Where does the data come from and how fresh is it?

GeoNames, under CC BY 4.0, loaded into the shared geography database and kept current with GeoNames' daily modification files. Nothing is fetched from a third party at request time.

What does a call cost?

2 tokens. The free plan covers 250 lookups a month.

City and place-level forward and reverse geocoding for 235,640 populated places worldwide, self-hosted from GeoNames and refreshed daily: turn a place name into coordinates (population-ranked, with exact, prefix and alternate-name matching for local and historical names like Firenze or Bombay) or coordinates into the nearest places with distances. Every result carries the GeoNames id, region, population, timezone and place type (capital, admin seat, neighbourhood). No third-party calls at request time.

Every call needs an X-Api-Key header. A free key includes 500 tokens a month, no card required. 2 tokens per call, so the free plan covers about 250 calls a month.
