Where does the dictionary come from?

SCOWL, the curated word list behind many open-source spell checkers: 132,729 words covering US, UK and Canadian spellings, contractions, common proper names and abbreviations.

How are suggestions ranked?

Candidates within a small edit distance are ranked by real-world word frequency, so 'teh' suggests 'the' first rather than an obscure alternative.

Will it flag rare but real words?

Rarely. The dictionary is broad on purpose so legitimate technical and proper terms pass while genuine misspellings such as 'alot' are caught.

Can I check a whole paragraph?

Yes. POST a longer body and every misspelt token is returned with its position and suggestions.

Which languages are supported?

English only. For other languages, detect the language first and route accordingly.

Validity comes from a curated 132,000-word dictionary (SCOWL: US and UK spellings, contractions, common proper names and abbreviations), so real misspellings like "teh" or "alot" are caught while rare legitimate words pass; suggestions are ranked by real-world word frequency using edit-distance matching. Check a single word, or scan a whole text (up to 5,000 characters) for misspellings — acronyms are skipped and possessives are understood.
